    I have had a similar one running for about ten years now. As for brightness, these models usually have a High/Low switch. You can find it on the back or the side, and it should help reduce the glare. The sleep function is also quite convenient. You just press the Sleep button and select a timer interval. Btw, if you have the desire to understand all the hidden functions or to properly replace the backlight, I recommend checking the service manual for THOMSON CR370P. It clarifies the circuit diagram and all the button functions in great detail. As for the battery, the 9V battery is solely a backup so your alarm and configurations don’t revert during a power interruption. The radio won’t work unless it’s plugged in, ’cause that’s just how it’s designed. But I’m guessing you mostly want to use it as a clock, right?
